Uttara Baokar, Indian theatre actressUttara Baokar was a prominent actress in Hindi theatre. She was born in Sangli, Maharashtra who began her career on the Marathi stage. She studied acting at the National School of Drama and performed as Priyamvada in Kalidasa`s Sakuntala directed by Ebrahim Alkazi in the year 1964. She joined its repertory in 1968, playing the lead for many years. She did varied roles that she handled with ease and grace. However, her formal training in vocal classical music gave her an edge in portraying characters required to sing. Her rich, distinctive voice added weight to her performances. Important parts enacted by her include Jasma in Shanta Gandhi`s Jasma Odan in 1968, Grusha in Khadiya ka berat `Ring of Chalk` in 1968, from Brecht`s Caucasian Chalk Circle, Polly in Tin take ka swang or `Three-rupee Swang` in 1970, from Brecht`s Threepenny Opera, Shilavati in Surendra Verma`s Surya ki antim kiran se surya ki pahli kiran tak or `From the Sun`s Last Ray to the Sun`s First Ray` in 1974, Binni in Mohan Rakesh`s Adhe adhure in 1976, Gandhari in Dharamvir Bharati`s Andha yug i.e. `Blind Age` in 1977, and Desdemona in Shakespeare`s Othello in 1983. She also directed Jaywant Dalvi`s Sandhya chhaya i.e. `Evening Shadows` in 1978 and acted in films under directors like Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen, and Govind Nihalani.
