Udgir Fort

Udgir Fort is an ancient hill fortress which is located in Udgir city in the district of Latur in the Maharashtra state. The geographical coordinate is latitude Coordinates 18°23`N 77°07`E. The fortress was built during the 12th century CE. The site was the location for the historic war between the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maratha Empire in 1761. The Nizam was defeated by the Maratha forces led by Sadashivrao Bhau. The treaty of Udgir was signed after this battle.

Udgir Fort was named after the Hindu Saint Udaygiri Rishi. There are some inscriptions in the fortress which prove that the local Muslim rulers promoted of knowledge and culture over the centuries.

Udgir Fort is built at the ground level and is bordered by a trench which is 40 feet deep. The fortress also comprises of various other buildings and palaces. The Samadhi of Udaygir Maharaj is also located inside the premises. The Samadhi is almost 60 feet below the normal ground level. Apart from these a number of military observation posts are also set up throughout the surrounding hills. Several rest houses constructed with white clay are also present in the fort precinct. However, most of these structures lie in a ruined condition at present. There are also two mosques in the area namely, Jamia Masjid and Maqbara Masjid.
