Thiruvennainallur

Thiruvennainallur is located in Viluppuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a panchayat town situated at a distance of 22 km away from Thirukkoilur and 24 km from Viluppuram. The main source of income for the inhabitants here is agriculture. Sugarcane is grown here on a huge scale.

History of Thiruvennainallur
Thiruvennainallur has a rich history dating back to almost 1000 years. The town is surrounded by villages known for its tourist spots. A small village Thiruedayaru is located at a distance of almost 6 km from Thiruvennainallur. The village is known and famous for 1000 years old shrine built during the rule of the Chola Dynasty. The ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Marutheeswarar, another form of Lord Shiva and stands as a proof to the architectural beauty and grandeur of the dynasty. It also boasts about the artistic skills of the ancient craftsmen. The enchanting landscapes here and the Pennar River flowing by the side of the village accelerate the beauty of the village. Thiruedayaru is an example of the rich Tamil culture and history.

According to history Thiruvennainallur was resided by the famous Tamil poet Vennaivelan. Another famous person Maikandar earlier known as Suvethana Perumal was born in Pennadam. He however, resided in Thiruvennainallur from a very minor three. It is said that once he was playing on the streets of Thiruvennainallur he was blessed by the sage Paranjothi. Later he wrote the famous poem Sivagnanabotham. Saiva Sithaantham regards this as one of the important poems.

Pilgrimage Centres in Thiruvennainallur
Thiruvennainallur is an important pilgrimage centre for the people residing in the nearby places. The town is known for the well known temple dedicated to Lord Shiva or Kripapureeshwarar. It is said that here Sundaramoorthy Nayanar began singing hymns the praise of the Almighty. It is believed that God himself showed him the path of light. It is also believed that Sage Sandalya practised penance here and attained Moksha.
