Tamasho

Tamasho is actually the rural form of Sindhi theatre. It is essentially a prerogative of Muslim feudal lords in Sindh. Although an erotic idiom like the Marathi Tamasha, it is quite different. Tamasho performers are called by Vaderas or landlords to present a show in an open place before the invited audience. They are invited mostly on such occasions as weddings or the circumcision of Muslim boys. The Tamasho party consists of one or two songstresses, accompanied by their own instrumentalists and a jester. The witty dialogue between the women, or between jester and singer, is followed by romantic lyrics. These are generally based on the ragas Pilu, Sindhu Kafi, and Bhairavi. The music normally uses changu, sarangi, tabla, dholak, and duhilu drums. Tamasho goes on for hours and ends with lavish payments to the participants and a feast for the audience.
