In the epic Ramayana, Sutikshana is mentioned as an ascetic of extraordinary merit on account of his austerities. When Lord Rama and Sita visited Sutikshana in his hermitage in the forest they found him covered with mud. His head was covered with matted hair; his body was reduced to bones and skin. Sutikshana was absorbed in profound forgetfulness of all earthly things but when Rama paid his respects then the sage at once embraced him, and bestowed his blessings on Rama.
