Sushmitha Singha Roy, Indian AthleteSushmitha Singha Roy is an Indian athlete hailing from Midnapore district of West Bengal. She was born on 26th March, 1984. She showed her proficiency in heptathlon. This heptathlon is a track and field combined events contest made up of seven events. The name heptathlon derives from the Greek word "hepta" which means seven and "athlon" which means contest.

Sushmitha Singha Roy had won a silver medal and a bronze medal for her respective category at the IAAF Asian Championships, which was held in the year 2005 in Incheon, of South Korea, and 2007 IAAF Asian Championships in Amman, Jordan.

Sushmitha Singha Roy was qualified for the heptathlon in women at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after attaining a B-standard of 5,866 points from the Indian Federation Cup, which was held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Sushmitha Singha Roy initially placed thirty-third out of forty-three heptathletes in the event, while she made with a total score of 5,705 points. But she was elevated to a single higher position, when Lyudmila Blonska from Ukraine stripped off her silver medal after she tested positive for methyl testosterone hormone.

In the following year, Sushmitha Singha Roy suffered numerous setbacks in her sporting career.

Sushmitha Singha Roy finished last out of twenty-six athletes at the 2009 IAAF World Championships which was held in Berlin, Germany, with a total tally of 4,983 points, which was farther from her personal best of 6,027, set at a national meet in Bengaluru.

Sushmitha Singha Roy also missed out the 2009 Asian Championships in Guangzhou, China, and the Open National Championships in Bhopal, because of her left hamstring injury. But she still worked hard with her great determination.

Sushmitha Singha Roy eventually came out of rehabilitation in time for her preparation and training to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which was held in Delhi. She represented as the host nation India.

Sushmitha Singha Roy nearly missed out of medal contention, when she finished sixth in the women`s heptathlon with a total score of 5,120 points.
