Suddhendra Narayan Singh Deo was a prominent Chhau performer. Born in 1927, he was the youngest son of the former Maharaja of Seraikella in Singhbhum district. This genre of Chhau was closely associated with the Seraikella royal family, whose members were its foremost dancers. Suddhendra Narayan learnt the style from his uncle, Bijoy Pratap Singh Deo, and his elder brother Subhendra Narayan, surpassing them and becoming its leading exponent after India`s independence.
Prince Suddhendra Narayan Singh Deo popularised the form throughout the country, performed in Europe as well, and headed Sri Kalapitha, the principal institute imparting training in the form. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Seraikella Chhau dance in the year 1963. Suddhendra Narayan Singh Deo died in the year 2001.
