Style of Asvaghosha

Style of Asvaghosha is unmistakably that of the Vidarbha type. In Vidarbha style long compounds, alliteration are used, harsh sound effects, love of alliteration and of harsh sound effects are used.

Style of Asvaghosha is simple as it aims at sense rather than ornamentation. He aims at narration, to describe, to preach his philosophy of renunciation of selfish desire and universal active benevolence and effort for the good. His verses possess clarity; vividness and elegance of diction. His works attain a high measure of attractiveness. The picture of the pleasures of love is marked by intimate detail which universally appeals to all.

He possesses a burning enthusiasm for his own ideal to seek his own freedom from rebirth in this world of misery. His own skill is evident in Canto ii of the Sannda-rananda where he exhibits his knowledge of aorist forms.

Asvaghosa`s metrical skill cannot be doubted, though the manuscripts present a text in which metrical deficiencies are rarely present. He adopts the Udgata for Canto iii of the Saundarananda.
