Som Nath Sadhu was an actor, director, and playwright of Kashmiri theatre. He was born in 1935 in Kashmir. In 1955, he joined Radio Kashmir in Srinagar as a staff artist and eventually reached the position of Station Director. In collaboration with Pushkar Bhan, he started a daily radio feature, Zuni Dab, greatly popular among the masses, for which the Government of India awarded them the Padma Sri in 1974. He also worked in two Kashmiri feature films, Menzirath and Shairi Kashmir Mahjoor.
His plays, the names that can be mentioned as Janaki, Lwakutboy i.e. `Younger Brother`, Zi rang or `Two Colours`, Shama dan or `Candlestick`, Avihin or `Vortex`, Shararat or `Mischief` were admired mainly for their humane satire and funny situations. Sadhu`s versatile acting and improvisation of dialogue added to their success. Grand Rehearsal in 1967 presented by Rangmanch Theatre and directed by Makhanlal Saraf, won for him and Pushkar Bhan an award for best play. He remained actively associated with the Rangmanch and other Kashmiri theatre groups. His performance in Bhan`s Machami in 1970 was unforgettable. Som Nath Sadhu died in 1982.
