Shiv Kumar Joshi was a prominent Gujarati playwright. He was born into a family of pandits but a businessman by vocation, he entered the theatre world at Natmandal, the performing troupe in Ahmadabad under Jaishankar Sundari, as an actor in Saratchandra Chatterjee`s Biraj bahu i.e. `Biraj the Bride` and Devdas. He started adapting novels for the stage and writing one-act radio drama, later collected as Prasanna dampatya i.e. `Contented Marriage`. Along with those of Prabodh Joshi, the popular one-act playwright, his short works were produced in the 1960s and 1970s all over Gujarat.
Shiv Kumar Joshi wrote more than two dozen full-length plays, among them Sumangla, Saputara, and Suvarnarekha were very popular. Suvarnarekha was one of the first to win the Sangeet Natak Akademi Prize for Plays, now discontinued. He was a writer of impressive dialogue, he had greater success on radio than on stage. Shiv Kumar Joshi was the centre of literary and theatrical activities among Gujaratis in Calcutta, inspiring many talents such as Madhu Rye. Shiv Kumar Joshi died in the year 1988.
