Shamshad Hussain was born in the year 1946 in Mumbai. Shamshad studied at the College of Fine Arts in Baroda. He later went to the Royal College of Art, London. Almost all his paintings since then have displayed a maturity seldom found these days. He held his first solo show in 1968. In 1983 he won the Lalit Kala Academy`s National award. His success has propelled him to the forefront of modern Indian art
Shamshad did his Post Graduation from Royal College of Art, London (1979-80). In 1983-85 he was also awarded the Govt. of India Fellowship for Art. He has held exhibitions in different parts of the world including the Biennales of Tokyo, Dhaka, Ankara and Bhopal.
Born in Bombay in 1946, Shamshad Hussain did his diploma in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Baroda, and post- graduation from the Royal College of art, London. Shamshad`s artistic career has been formed by several influences. As a son of M.F.Hussain, the celebrated early Indian artist, Shamshad had to struggle against the powerful influence of his father to create his own distinct style. At the Royal College of Art, Shamshad had adopted the graphic clarity and essential flatness of the painted surface as important elements for his paintings. He paints people with a controlled palette. Shamshad had about 28 solo shows of his paintings and graphics in Hyderabad, Bombay, Delhi, Baroda, Chennai, Bangalore, Copenhagen, London and Geneva.
He had executed some murals and sculptures: two murals in Jaipur and Delhi (1969-70), monumental sculpture of a scientist in Hyderabad (1 98 1), sculpture in fiber glass and a relief in metal in Delhi (1986), and another metal relief in Mussoorie (1988).
