In the epic Ramayana it is mentioned Sarabhanga is the name of the celebrated devotee. Lord Indra visited his hermitage and invited him to go heaven for leading a righteous life. Sarabhanga denied from going to heaven, and the reason he gave to Indra that he would not depart to heaven until he had seen Lord Rama.
Thus when Lord Rama visited Sarabhanga then he requested Rama to behold while the sage prepared a fire, offered ghee, and entered the flame and the fire consumed his body. Sarabhanga burnt himself alive and then his soul went to heaven for leading a life of religious austerities. Then Sarabhanga`s soul passed by the heaven of the gods and he ascended to heaven of Brahma.
