Sambalpur University

Sambalpur University is located at Sambalpur in the state of Orissa. It is popularly known as Jyoti Vihar.

Sambalpur University, OrissaSambalpur University offers courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The Chancellor of the university is Governor of Orissa. The campus is located around 15 km away from Sambalpur in Burla. The jurisdiction of the district is spread over ten districts of the state, which are Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Bargarh, Bolangir, Subarnapur, Nawapara, Kalahandi, Boudh, and Athamallik sub- division of Angul District.

History of Sambalpur University
Sambalpur University Act was passed on 10 December 1966 by the Orissa Legislature for establishment of a University in the Western part of Orissa. It started functioning from 1 January 1967. Prof. Parsuram Mishra was the first Vice-Chancellor of this varsity. Initially the University started functioning in 1967 in a rented private building at Dhanupali, Sambalpur; then in a government building at Ainthapali, Sambalpur. In 1973 it was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla.

The university is surrounded by hills and dense forest. The university is known as the knowledge hub of Western Orissa.

Courses offered at Sambalpur University
The postgraduate (PG) department of Sambalpur University offers PG Diploma, MA, M Sc., M Tech, M.Phil, PhD, and D.Sc degrees. Limited numbers of scholarships for bright students are offered in this university. The courses offered include: MA in Sociology, Political Science and Public Administration, General Physics, MSc in Nuclear Physics, Electronics, Computer Science and Statistics, MBA, MPS, MFC & MIB. The University provides postgraduate courses in twenty-seven subjects through twenty postgraduate departments. The University has received autonomy for the postgraduate departments of Chemistry, Life Sciences, History, Economics, Library and Information Sciences and Mathematics.
