S. G. Vasudev was born in 1941in Mysore. He graduated from the Govt. School of Arts, Chennai in 1968. He has held art shows in many parts of the world and his works are in collections at various galleries. He has won many awards in India and abroad. Vasudev was one of the founder members of the Chola Mandal Artists Village, Chennai. He has participated in several group shows and International exhibitions such as the Paris Biennale 1986, Cuba Biennale 1986. His international solo shows were held in USA, Germany and Canada.
He has participated in several group shows and International exhibitions such as the Triennale India, Paris Biennale 1986, Cuba Biennale 1986, National gallery of Modern Art show at Washington, the festival of India in Tokyo and the New South - Contemporary Painting & Sculpture from South India. He has had several solo shows in India and his international solo shows were held in USA, Germany, UK and Canada. He has also been the art director for two award-winning Kannada films.
Vasudev started initially by painting landscapes and still life. Vasudev`s forte lies in his line. The lines are ornamental and it fleshes out his figures and makes them one with their environment. He is known for his drawings and murals. He has a firmly rooted style which has developed independently of the commerce-driven patterns of artistic endeavour in India`s metropolitan centers.
He has been influenced by folk and tribal art. His works are connected to deep rooted traditions of India and yet they have a contemporary look about them. Thereafter he evolved a new technique and started painting the `Fantasy` series where the elements like water, mountain, sun, moon, stars and trees have been portrayed. In the early 90s he was associated with environmental activists as a result he painted a series and called it "Earthscapes". His early paintings of trees were done with a bold impasto technique exploring the texture of the barks and the leaves.
He primarily works with oils on canvas, with ink on paper and water colours. He has been working with a master weaver to create tapestries in silk which would depict different themes he has been exploring over the years. He was awarded the National Award from the All India Lalit Kala Academy in 1967. Over the years he has worked on a series of Lord Ganesha from a purely artistic perspective. Most of his themes follow a chronological consistency.
