Roma Das

Roma Das is a renowned Assamese short story writer whose short stories reveal impulses of the characters and not their temper.

Roma Das, Assamese LiteratureRoma Das tries to capture varied facades of life in his short stories. Srestha galpa is a collection of short stories that reveal the complexities of the characters. The idiosyncrasies of his characters have a glazed brilliance in them that invariably compels attention. He captures the life of a middle class society and paints a convincing panorama of fashion that cannot be questioned. His stories like Rhododendronar bilas are marked by slight irony. Most of his stories can be described as romantic rhapsodies that are woven round characters which are true sentimentally. Barsa jetia namye depicts the romantic ego.

Das is capable to enliven a situation with passion. In his lucid style the author provides a perspective in Jahnavi which is lyrical. He depicts a prudish society. Jivanar Arati is a story of abnormal morbidity and suppressed sex. Das has a bold attitude as far as sex representation is concerned. He seems to have absorbed the style and technique of Lakshmi Sarma. His latest collection of stories is Barsajetia namye (1964).
