Rina Singha, born in the year 1937 is a famous name in Kathak dance form.

Rina Singha, Indian Kathak DancerRina Singha is a famous Kathak dancer, born on 1937 in Kolkata. She attended the university in Hyderabad and was chosen for a government financed project that was intended to preserve and revive India`s classical dance form. She eventually became a soloist in the India`s premier Kathak dance company and an internationally popular artist who has toured the world.

While Singha was still working on her PhD project on her subject- geography in England, she was asked to become a lead dancer, by respected dancer Ram Gopal, in his company. After five years, Singha with her entire family immigrated to Canada where she worked to enhance the knowledge of dance tradition from across the world.

She designed and taught a world dance course at York University in 1970 and developed Heritage Canada, one of the first multicultural programs for the Toronto public school system. Added to that she also created a "Cultural Clues Approach to Learning" course that has actually been implemented in many schools. She has also been actively involved in creating educational videos for UNICEF.

She collaborated with the Music Gallery in Toronto in the late 1990s, to create the Legacies in Dance festival, which presents supports and promotes non-Western dance. To augment the awareness of kathak dance, Singha also founded the Kathak Instituteas the Rina Singha Dance Organization.

Singha, as a dance ethnologist, has gathered info and researched about dance narratives from around the world. As a choreographer, she is noted for blending her Christian faith with her kathak training in works such as Yeshu Katha - 4 women tell the story of Jesus (1991).
