Rangalal Bandyopadhyay

Rangalal Bandyopadhyay is a Bengali author who wrote four narrative poems Padmini Upakhyan, Karma-devi, Sura-sundari, and Kanchi-kaveri.

Rangalal Bandyopadhyay was one of the younger writers who was influenced by Ishwar Chandra Gupta and served their literary position in the Samvad Prabhakar and the monthly Prabhakar.

He had authored four narrative poems Padmini Upakhyan, Karma-devi, Sura-sundari, and Kanchi-kaveri. Padmini Upakhyan is a spirited poem of patriotism and freedom. It is based on the well-known theme of Padmini, the queen of Chittor and Ala - ud - din Khilji who was the emperor of Delhi. The theme is taken from Rajput history.

Themes of Karma-devi and Sura-sundari were derived from Rajput history. He was highly influenced by Ishwar Gupta. He has used many old-fashioned elements in his poetry. He was also influenced by Byron, Scott and Tom Moore.

His Padmini Upakhyan is the first poem in Bengali language which is modern. It was published in 1858. He died in 1859. He played a major role in Krittibas movement that modernized Bengali literature.
