Ramagiri, Hill Of RamaRamagiri is said to be the hill of Rama and is a mountain near Nagpur. This place is now called Ramtek which is located about 50 kms to the northeast of the Nagpur city. It is considered as one of the holy places of the State of Maharashtra. Covering an area of 1129 sq. miles, Ramtek consists of lush green hillocks, lovely lakes and a number of picturesque ancient temples. Ramagiri is also famous for its relation with Great poet Kalidasa. It is at Ramtek that the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa composed his famous work `Meghdootam`. Kalidasa Smarak, a memorial dedicated to the poet can also be seen here.

Legends of Ramagiri
Several myths and legends are associated with Ramtek and it was believed to be the place where Lord Rama, the Hindu God, rested while he was in exile. Legend has it that the ashram of the Hindu sage Agastya was located at this place and he was very much disrupted by the demons while doing his religious rites. Lord Rama was distressed to hear about this and took a vow (Tek in local language) to relieve the place from the demons. And hence the place got the name Ramtek which means `vow of Ram`. It is believed that whoever takes a vow at Ramtek is blessed by the God for its fulfillment.

Ramagiri, Hill Of Rama
Nagardhan: Nagardhan situated 38 kms northeast of Nagpur and about 9kms south of Ramtek, is an old town founded by a Suryavanshi King. Main attraction of Nagardhan is the Nagardhan Fort, supposed to be built by Raja Raghuji Bhonsle, a Maratha King of the Bhonsle dynasty.

Dragon Palace Temple: The Dragon Palace Temple is a Buddhist temple which is dedicated to Lord Buddha. The temple is located in Kamptee, a satellite township of Nagpur district. Located at a distance of 20kms north-east of Nagpur, Dragon Palace sprawl over an area of 10 acres of land is a unique temple with striking architecture.

Khindsi Lake: Khindsi, the picturesque and large lake surrounded by verdant forests on all sides is located about 3.5kms from Ramtek and 53kms from Nagpur. Tourist can enjoy boating in Khindsi Lake in motorboats, pedal boats, rowing boats, water scooters etc.

Shri Ram Temple/ Ramtek Fort Temple: Shri Ram Temple known by various names such as Ram Mandir, Ram Dham and Ramtek Fort Temple is located on the Ramagiri Hill at Ramtek, about 50kms northeast of Nagpur. This historical temple is believed to be more than 600 years old and is dedicated to Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana.

Festivals at Ramagiri
Kalidasa Festival is celebrated annually to honor Kalidasa at Ramtek in Nagpur for two days in the month of November. During Kalidasa festival, celebrities of music, dance and drama gathered here to perform their talent.

Ramjanam Festival is held in the month of Chaitra (March-April) to celebrate the birthday of Lord Rama. The main attraction of this very popular and religious festival of Nagpur is the Rath Yatra - the chariot procession by taking the idol of Lord Rama from the Shri Ram Temple.
