Princely state of Patna, also known as Patnagarh, which is currently located in western Orissa in India, was subject to the suzerainty of the British crown and was not a part of British India until the year 1947. The region was under the Orissa States Agency. The princely state had its capital at Balangir or Bolangir and was spread over an area of 6,503 sq km. when the country achieved independence from the British rule, the ruler of the princely state of Patna did not provide consent to accede to the newly independent Union of India. Later in the year 1948, the ruler acceded the state to India.
The boundaries of the former state are rather coterminous with the boundaries of the present Balangir district. The reign of the Chauhan clan ended with the merger of Sonepur and Patna with Orissa on 1st January 1948. These two regions formed the modern district of Balangir. Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo, the last ruler of the princely state of Patna eventually entered democratic politics and was appointed as the Chief Minister of Orissa from 8th March 1967 to 9th January 1971.
