Prabodh Navinchandra Joshi was a prominent Gujarati dramatist and a theatre historian. He was born in the year 1926, from his childhood only he was interested in this field. Beginning his career in 1943, and using theatre to propagate the national freedom struggle while in college, he started acting with Rangmandal, Ahmedabad. Moving to Bombay, he participated in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan`s theatre movement as an actor and writer of short plays. Maf karo a natak nahin thai or `Sorry, This Drama Will Not Take Place` in 1953 was his first one-act drama, performed by all and sundry in Gujarat and Bombay. His full-length Pattani i.e. `Pair of Cards` in 1955 also became a craze, followed by Kadam mila ke chalo i.e. `Keep in Step` in 1957. This was very successful with amateur groups. He is credited with 500 one-act plays, 350 short radio plays, and forty-five full-length plays. Joshi won innumerable accolades as a writer by using his theatre training and acting ability to compose stage able drama. Prabodh Navinchandra Joshi was one of the most-produced authors of the 1960s and 1970s, yet remains unrecognized in literary circles. He expired in the year 1991.
