Padmanath Gohain Barooah was a scholarly person from the beautiful valley of Assam. He was born in 1871 and from childhood only he was very bright and also interested in multiple fields. Padmanath Gohain Barooah was the founder-secretary of the Baan Stage, at Tezpur in central Assam. He wrote eight plays. His first play, Gaon burah i.e. `Village Headman` in 1899, had a social content for breaking the general trend of Assamese theatre. It exposed the exploitation of simple villagers by petty government officers of Assamese birth who took advantage of the early British administrators` ignorance of local conditions. A lively comedy with a tragic undertone, it portrayed Assamese society so vividly that it is regarded as one of his finest works.
Gohain Barooah wrote the first historical play in Assamese, Jaymati in 1900, followed by three more, all aimed at inspiring patriotism. The theme was love of the motherland and respect for past glory. His only mythological play, Ban Raja in 1932, was his last written when this genre had given way to historical drama. It was actually by his own confession, a by-product of his magnum opus. Krishna was a profound theosophical work in three volumes. He also authored the first Assamese novel as well. Padmanath Gohain Barooah was very talented person who expired in 1946.
