Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve is a popular biosphere reserve, located in Pahalgram District of Jammu and Kashmir. This biosphere reserve is often denoted as a national park of Jammu and Kasmir and attracts a large number of tourists all the time.
Covered an area of about 400 square kilometers, Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve is the safe abode of hundreds of endangered species like hangul, musk deer, brown bear, leopard, koklas, monal and snow cock. The uniqueness of this wildlife abode is the strict security for the animals from the illegal hunters.
Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve holds a rich cover of natural vegetation. This Indian biosphere reserve is dominant in the coniferous forest, consisting of Cedrus deodara, Pinus griffithii, Abies pindrow, Aesculus indica and many other herbs and shrubs. The forest account 90 percent of the land covered with thick coniferous forest, which is attracting the trekkers. And the waves of the forest recall the story of Shakespeare`s Macbeth. The major shrubs are Indigofera heterantha, Viburnum spp and Sorbaria tomentosa. The foothills of this biosphere reserve cover the herbs like Rumex patientia, Primula spp., anemone spp, which are mostly dicotyledons. Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve is accessible through Srinagar, Jammu and Anantanag.
