Neelu Phule was a popular actor of stage and screen of Marathi theatre. He was born in Pune in 1931. He did his education only up to the tenth standard. His father encouraged him to act professionally, and he performed as a child. He wrote and directed a play called Udayan and staged a Loknatva Tamasha. His first commercial production was Lavangi mirchi Kolhapurchi i.e. `The Fiery Chilli from Kolhapur` in 1965, and the same year he directed and acted as the Minister in another Loknatya, Katha aklechya kandyachi or `Tale of the Fool`. His versatile, naturalistic style created lead roles in Vijay Tendulkar`s Sakharam Binder in 1972 and Baby in 1976, Jaywant Dalvi`s Suryasta i.e. `Sunset` in 1978, and Shyam Manohar`s Premachi goshta? i.e. `Story of Love?` in 1997.
Neelu Phule entered movies in 1968 and continues to act in both cinema and Marathi theatre. Of his 170 film appearances, the notable ones include the characters of the corrupt politician in Jabbar Patel`s Samna or `Confrontation` in 1975, the journalist in Sinhasn or `Throne` in 1979. In Hindi, he did the role of a machinating politician in Mahesh Bhatt`s Saransh or `Gist` in 1984. Phule has a deep social commitment, raising Rs 50 lakh as a Gratitude Fund for social workers.
