Narain Swamy, who is also known as Venkatraman Narayan Swamy was born on 23rd May 1924 in Kozikode in Kerala. He was hailed from the Southern part of India. Venkatraman Narayan Swamy did his studies in Madras (Chennai). He joined the army in 1944 and retired as a Major.
Venkatraman Narayan Swamy made his Test debut against New Zealand in 1955 to 1956. He played in the first match of the series. He was notified as Right-hand batsman and right arm first medium bowler.
Venkatraman Narayan Swamy opened the bowling with Dattu Phadkar, another renowned Test cricketer of his contemporary who took no wickets and was dropped. India tried out different opening bowling pairs in every match of that series.
The cricketing span of Venkatraman Narayan Swamy was from 1951-1959. Venkatraman Narayan Swamy started his first class career with five wickets in an innings in each of his first two matches. Venkatraman Narayan Swamy also played for Services in the Ranji Trophy from 1951 to 1952 and 1958 to 59. There he took 58 wickets at an average of 19.98.

After his retirement from Indian cricket scenario, Venkatraman Narayan Swamy became the staff of Regiment of Artillery association in the Nasik road camp.
He was first Kerala born cricketer to play domestic and international test matches. He died on May 1, 1983 at Dehradun in Uttar Pradesh. He died at the age of 58.
