Muchukunda

In Mahabharata, Muchukunda was a great sage who kills Kalayavana, the great Yavana combatant king.

Kalayavana was a great Yavana warrior and he is unbeatable and unmatched in battle due to a boon. He was a figure who is portrayed as a merciless, ruthless and cruel fellow.

Kalayavana came to know that Krishna is the only being that can defeat him in battle and accepting this challenge sets out to invade Krishna`s kingdom. When the two armies face each other in battle Krishna descended from his chariot and starts to walk away. He is chased by Kalayavana. After a long time Krishna, followed by Kalayavana enters a dark cave. The dark cave is inhabited by a sage Muchukunda who has been meditating there was generations.

When the person on whom the gaze of the sage falls he is doomed to instantaneous death. Kalayavana in a fit of anger and unable to see in the dark attacks the Muchukunda mistaking him to be Krishna. The sage opens his eyes and his gaze falls on Kalayavana who is immediately burnt to death.

There is another story relating to the life of Muchukunda carried on war against the Buddhists till he was too weary to fight any longer; whereupon he sought the grateful isolation of the Guttikonda cave. In this peaceful and clean spot he fell asleep. It was a sleep of the greatest profundity, and lasted for several centuries. In an evil moment for the Buddhists they entered the cave in pursuit of Krishna, and disturbed the placid slumbers of Muchukunda. After a sleep of some hundreds of year he was not a man to be trifled with so he rose up in the excitement of his renovated energies and extirpated the obnoxious Buddhists.
