Mrichakatika or the Toy-Cart is the name of a ten act Sanskrit drama written by Shudraka in the 2nd century B.C. This drama is of great interest in both literary and national history of the Hindus.
Mrichakatika or the Little Clay Cart or the Toy Cart is also spelled Mrcchakatika, Mricchakatika, or Mrichchhakatika. The play is set in Avanti or Ujjain. The play`s composition is attributed to a king named Shudraka and gives him a high character both in arms and letters. The subject is the love of a respectable Brahman for a courtesan; the practice of antiquity, as regarded the interaction of the being much more lax than in modern days.
The main characters of the play Mrichakatika are Charudatta, Vasantasena, Cheta-Kumbhilika and Vidushaka.
The plot of the drama describes rife with romance, sex, court intrigue and comedy. The plot of the play has numerous twists and turns. The main story is about a young man named Charudatta, and his love for Vasantasena. Vasantasena was a rich courtesan or nagarvadhu. A royal courtier, who is also attracted to Vasantasena, complicates the love affair. The plot is further intricate by robbers and flaw identities. Thus all these effects made the play hilarious and entertaining play.
