Manaswini

Manaswini was the wife of great sage Mikranda, as mentioned in Hindu mythology. There is a mythical story relating to the life of Manaswini.

Manaswini was a servant of Devi Parvati. One day she happened to breast-feed baby Lord Ganesha. Devi Parvati was not pleased with the fact of a servant breast-feeding her baby. She cursed Manaswini that she would be born in a Chandala (outcaste) family.]

Manaswini was born as Koolivaka, a chandalika and was very beautiful. One day Lord Shiva went to hunt in the jungle and saw her and her beauty made him lustful. He told her to be intimate with him. Koolivaka, who was a devotee of Parvati, felt that mating with lord would bring forth the wrath of the deity upon her. However she feared the rage of Shiva in case she refused him.

Koolivaka or Manaswini prayed to her Devi Parvati and begged her to save her from the dilemma. Goddess Parvati was satisfied with her innocence and purity. She appeared before her and revealed her identity.

Devi Parvati`s anger subdued and took pity on Manaswini. The goddess blessed her that although she is born as a Chandala she would get the opportunity to breast-feed the son of Shiva.

The Devi said that she herself will take the image of Koolivaka and deceive the Lord Shiva. A child with divine power was born through the holy union. Real Koolivaka or Manaswini was given the charge of the baby boy Chathan. Chathan was very powerful and was the killer of Jalandhara, a powerful Asura.
