In the mythology it is stated that Maitreya was a disciple of Parasara. Again in the Vishnu Purana it is said that Maitreya`s guru Parasara was one of the chief interlocutors in the Bhagavata. He is also described as a great Rishi or sage in Mahabharata who denounced Duryodhana`s death.
Maitreya is also stated as a son of Mitrayu. Mitrayu was the person from whom Maftreya Brahmans were descended.
Maitreya is a Brahmin jester in the play of the Toy Cart, an ancient Sanskrit play. Maitreya is the friend of Charudatta. He was the Vidushaka of the play, the Toy Cart. Maitreya is a diverse character mixed with shrewdness and simplicity, with a friendly nature.
