M. R. Ranganatha Rao is an innovative artist of Gombeyata i.e. Kannada puppetry.

M. R. Ranganatha Rao was a pioneering artist of Gombeyata. Gombeyeta is a form of Kannada puppetry. M. R. Ranganatha Rao was born in 1932. He learnt the traditional art from his grandfather, Narasingha Rao, a professional puppeteer. He took up employment as a schoolteacher. However, he committed himself to reviving temple-based string puppetry by resurrecting plays from the old repertoire. In this was he created new marionettes with indigenous raw materials, and devising special kits as educational aids for use in schools of rural Karnataka.
