Lomaharshana

Lomaharshana belonged to the Suta caste and was a disciple of Suta.

Lomaharshana, Disciple Of Veda VyasaLomaharshana is the disciple of Veda Vyasa and was a `suta`. Sutas were professional storytellers. Lomaharshana heard the Puranas from Vyasa and spread them to the other sages.

The name `Lomaharshana` is derived from two words, `Loma` and `Harshana`. `Loma` means hair and `Harshana` means to thrill. Lomaharshana was a good story teller. He was born to a Kshatriya father and a Brahmin mother.

In a mythical story it is said that Lomaharshana narrated the Brahmananda Purana to the sages assembled at the sacrifice at Kurukshetra. Lomaharshana told the assembled sages that the Brahmananda Purana has its genesis in the earlier famous Yajna at Naimisharanya. At that Yajna, Vayu Deva, the Wind demi-god addressed the sages and his words of wisdom were recorded as the Brahmananda Purana. Lomaharshana then told the sages the story of King Pururava.

Lomaharshana had a son named Ugrasrava Sauti, well-versed in the Puranas. Ugrasrava was the disciple of Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa, the author of Mahabharata. He narrated the epic Mahabharata to the sage Saunaka like his father Lomaharshana used to recite.
