In Hinduism, Lokapala is the Guardians of the four cardinal directions. The Lokapalas are termed as the regents of the east, south, west and north. They are Kubera (north), Yama (south), Indra (east) and Varuna (west).
In another part of the Vishnu Purana eight Lokapalas are mentioned as regents of the spheres. The eight deities in that character are Indra, Yama, Varuna, Kubera, Vivaswat, Soma, Agni, and Vayu.
The images of the Lokapalas are usually placed in pairs at the entrance to tombs. As Guardians they can call upon the spirits of the next world to help them protect the tomb if necessary.
