Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani

Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani was a Sindhi poet, prose writer, and also a playwright. His pen name was `Khaki. He was born in the year 1867. Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani embraced Sikhism in 1913 and became known as Lilaramsingh. This Gujarati theatre personality was one of the early dramatists who, along with Mirza Qalich Beg, contributed significantly to the growth of Sindhi theatre. The mythological Harishchandra in 1900 was his first attempt at drama, staged by the D. J. Sindh College Amateur Dramatic Society in 1895. The society also produced Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani`s other works, including the mythological Ramayana in 1898 and Draupadiya Pandavacharitra i.e. `Draupadi or Pandava Characters` in 1905.

Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani, the Gujarati Theatre Personality offered plays on social topics, Mohan Tarika in 1896 and Surjan Radha in 1897 are some of the examples. They dwell at length on the issues of widow remarriage and religious conversion respectively, and explore the nature of social and individual responsibility. These proved successful and won him public acclaim. After a gap of almost twenty-five years, he composed the one-act plays, Lobhi lakhina i.e. `Generous, Covetous` and Shah Adil Khan, in 1930. Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani is credited with encouraging the Sindhi dramatists who followed him. Lilaram Vatanmal Lalwani died in the year 1941.
