Lakshmi Sarma

Lakshmi Sarma was a product of the Gandhian renaissance. However Western social thought and philosophy inspired his literary works. He was highly influenced by Hobbes and Locke. From Guy de Maupassant he drew technical inspiration which was graphic and blatant in expression. However he never resorted to vulgarity.

He was a socio-intellectual force who employed his power of narration that imparted a vibrant reality to his stories. He attacks the sham social order disrupting the basic ethos of life. Vidrohini is a story of a young widow who was reduced to an object of pity by social stubbornness. He has been influenced by Ibsen`s idea of the sovereignty of womanly impulse. The story imparts a lesson that Social suppression is an evil. Siraj is a poem of pity. Sarma`s basic inspiration has been from the tone and temper of the time that was pioneered by Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi.
