Kula Puranas

Hindu religion has various ancient chronicles about the gods, demons, kings, families and the cosmos as a whole. These myths, legends and stories are taken together to form the Puranic texts. Indian Puranas are classified according to their descriptive implication. Among all the Puranas, Kula Purana can be described to be another vital Purana. These puranas introduce the Indian civilisation to the history and origin of families.

Kula Purana narrates about the origin of each caste: namely Brahmin, Kshatriya, Sudra and Vaishaya. The text presents several myths, stories, and legends associated with each caste. Kula is term which is synonymous to family or tribe in Sanskrit. These Puranas provide detailed information on the sources for caste identity and the contests by rival castes. The historical account regarding the caste system and about the family was passed on from one generation to another orally or was noted down in vernacular languages.

There are several sections of Kula Purana. The Malla Purana is a Kula Purana which is associated with the Jyesthimallas. It describes about a Brahmin jati of wrestlers from Gujarat, who existed during the thirteenth century. This category classifies the types of wrestlers and defines their physical characteristics, describes types of exercises and techniques of wrestling as well as the preparation of the wrestling pit.
