Krishna Chandra Naik was a master of Mayurbhanj Chhau dance. Naik, born in 1920, was initiated from a very young age by Jogendra Kumar Bhanja and Bhagwan Das. He received full support from the Maharaja of Mayurbhanj, Pratap Chandra Bhanj Deo and his uncle Shridamachandra Bhanj. Krishna Chandra Naik performed well into his old age, unlike most Chhau dancers of his generation. He choreographed many outstanding items, and taught as a senior guru at the Mayurbhanj Chhau Nritya Pratisthan at Baripada and under assignment from the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
Krishna Chandra Naik was a Mayurbhanj Chhau Guru, who performed in the Mayurbhanj Royal Court. In his later life, Naik, choreographed and taught Chhau in Kolkata, Gwalior and New Delhi. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1975. He was also honored with the Sahitya Kala Parishad Saman.
Krishna Chandra Naik evolved this art form in to a new level, with bold and creative experiments without losing the authenticity of the dance form. Krishna Chandra Naik died in the year 1987.
