Khasas - Inhabitants of Khasa

Khasa is a prehistoric north western kingdom of India. The people living there were called Khasas. The origin of Khasas is not clear. They were the migrant group from Khasakhstan or original Khasakhs. The Khasas are referred as barbarous tribes and to have arrived from various lands. The past events suggest that Khasa were Non-Vedic Aryans who penetrated through North West India from central Asia. Khasas were the inhabitants of mountain or hills.

Khasas is one of the Mlechha tribes and one of the protectors of sage Vasistha and his cow. Vasistha Muni was saved by the Khasas when he was attacked by king Vishwamitra. Khasas being a barbarous tribe was defeated by Vasudeva Krishna.

Khasas are also mentioned in the description of Kurukshetra War. Khasas were on the side of Kaurava army and fought against the Pandavas. The other tribes on the side of Kauravas were the Kamvojas and the Sakas. They are illustrated to be armed with swords and lances. On one hand the Pulindas, the Khasas, the Bahlikas, the Nishadas, the Andhakas, the Tanganas, the Southerners, and the Bhojas were mentioned as combating with the Pandya king who was on the side of the Pandavas.

On the other hand, the Tusharas, the Yavanas, the Khasas, the Darvabhisaras, the Daradas, the Sakas, the Kamathas, the Ramathas, the Tanganas the Andhrakas, the Pulindas, the Kiratas of violent proficiency, the Mlecchas, the Mountaineers were mentioned as fighting for Duryodhana.
