The people who are the descendants of Vishwamitra are known as Kausikas. The people take Rajarishi Kausika as their root. There are eleven Royal clans of the ninety-six clan of Marathas that belong to Kaushika gotra.
The Gotra, the families or tribes of the Kausika Brahmans are referred in the Vishnu Purana. Kausikas are said to have been multiplied by intermarriages with other tribes, who were originally of the regal cast, like Vishwamitra. They obtained Brahmanhood through devotion.
The people belonging to the Kaushika Gotra are short tempered as they have descended from Sage Vishwamitra.
