Joy Mukherjee was a celebrated actor of Hindi film industry, remembered for his romantic musical movies during 1960s. His stylish looks and appealing performances earned him huge popularity in Bollywood. The actor was well appreciated for his great comic timing. He made his cinematic debut through the movie Love in Simla in 1960. His ventures in Bollywood also include film production and direction.

Joy Mukherjee was born on 24th February 1939 to Sati Devi (mother) and Sashadhar Mukherjee (father). His father was a successful film producer and the co founder of Filmalaya Studios. He was also known to have discovered the famous actresses Asha Parekh and Sadhana. Joy Mukherjee`s brother had married another famed Indian actress Tanuja. His uncles were the film director Subodh Mukherjee and renowned actors Kishore Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Ashok Kumar.

Career of Joy Mukherjee
Acting career of Joy Mukherjee began in the year 1960 with the movie Love in Simla in which he appeared alongside Sadhana under the direction of R.K. Nayyar. In the very first movie the actor rose to stardom and gained a strong footing in the film industry. Following this he paired with actress Asha Parekh for the movie Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon. Joy Mukherjee starred in a number of superhit movies such as Jee Chahta Hai alongside Rajashree, Ishaara alongside Vyjanthimala and Ek Musafir Ek Haseena alongside Sadhna which earned him huge fame. Enchanting music was the most special feature of Joy Mukherjee`s movies which played a key role in their success. However, the actor`s popularity started drying up by late 1960s. Afterwards Joy Mukherjee shifted his focus towards film production and direction.

As a producer and director his first venture was Humsaaya. Subsequently he took up more projects but none of them did well at the box office. He achieved his first success in this arena with the movie Ek Baar Muskura Do in the year 1972 which featured his brother Deb Mukherjee and Tanuja in the lead roles. Chailla Babu in 1977 was his last success as a director. Joy Mukherjee appeared in television serial Aye Dil-e-Nadan in 2009 along with his son Sujoy Mukherjee which was broadcasted in DD National channel.

Joy Mukherjee was married to Nilam and had two sons, Sujoy and Monjoy, and a daughter Simran.

Death of Joy Mukherjee
Joy Mukherjee died on 9th March 2012 at the age of 73 in Mumbai.
