Jambavati

Jambavati is the only daughter of Jambavat, the king of bears. Jambavati was given to Lord Krishna as his wife by her father, when he lost in a great fight with him. The story of Jambavati is told in the tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana. Jambavati received the famous `Syamantaka Jewel` as a gift from her father. Jambavati occupied the third most prominent position of eight principal queens of Krishna in Dwaraka.

Jambavati was well known as a very close and dear companion of Lord Krishna`s first wife Rukmini. But, Jambavati was always involved in a cold war with Satyabhama. Jamvati and Krishna had ten sons known as Samba, Sumitra, Purujit, Satyajit, Sahasrajit, Vijaya, Chitraketu, Vasuman, Dravida and Kratu. Lord Krishna was very affectionate to the sons of Jambavati, especially towards the eldest one called Samba. Jambavati has been said to be the indirect cause to Lord Krishna`s death through her son, Samba. The old hunter Jharas regained the iron club (arrow) of Samba from the belly of a sea-fish, which was the cause of Lord Krishna`s death.
