Jallikattu, Indian Traditional SportJallikattu is an ancient and traditional sport which is famous in Tamil Nadu. Jallikattu is an integral part of the celebration of Pongal. Basically a game of taming bulls, the bull is decked up with ribbons, coloured gulal and garlands. Playing Jallikattu is an ancient tradition of 2000years. The etymological Jallikattu is defined in a way that the meaning of the word is clearly depicted. The word is derived from `Salli` kassu meaning coins and `Kattu` connoting a package. Thus the term clearly defines that in the game the prize money for the person who will tame the bull will be attached to the horn of that bull. Being a popular Tamilian traditional sport, Jallikattu was said to be one of the popular games by which the women used to choose their grooms.

In some places, Jallikattu is reckoned as one of the popular games and this game is a part of celebration and entertainment. Places like Avaniapuram, Kanduppatti near Sivagangai, Sravayal near Karaikudi, Alanganallur, Thammampatti in Salem in Tamil Nadu, Venthanpatti near Ponnamaravathy, Palemedu near Madurai, Pallavarayanpatty near Cumbum, Tiruvapur near Pudukottai.

Though Jallikattu is said to be a game that is enjoyed by the whole mass, this game is dangerous too. Even deaths and bloodsheds are common. The bullfighters cannot kill the bull or use any kind of weapon to withhold the bull from attacking him.
