Jagan Nath Saqui was a leading actor of the Kashmiri theatre.

Jagan Nath Saqui was a prominent actor of the Kashmiri theatre. Born in 1898 he was also a National Conference activist who was imprisoned several times for his radical views. His personal experiences in his arduous life-struggle assisted him in expressing the inmost feelings of characters in crises. He started his career as an actor in the early 1920s in various amateur groups like the Raghunath Mandir Natak Mandal and Kala Kendra. He also worked with much enthusiasm in the troupe founded in Kashmir by Master Rahmat Ullah of Calcutta. He played important parts in Agha Hashr Kashmiri`s Urdu plays. In 1948, he joined Radio Kashmir as a staff artist and achieved great popularity for his role in the daily rural programme as Rustum Chacha i.e. Uncle Rustum. His acting as the hero`s father in Pushkar Bhan`s farce, Machami, was much admired. Saqui`s charismatic voice as an elder is still remembered and imitated. His role in the feature film Menzirath is memorable. Jagan Nath Saquidied in the year 1973.
