Indian Army in United Nations Peace Keeping operations has been constant in large scale, making the largest contributions in numbers and the quality of service rendered. The Indian Contingents have earned admiration for their military and diplomatic handling of the most complex responsibilities of bringing peace, hope and cheer to the victims.
In support of United Nations Peace Keeping endeavours, the Indian Army has contributed outstanding force commanders, elite military contingents, impartial observers and dedicated staff personnel. Their duty and performance has been widely acclaimed. Their civic action programmes and their ability to make rival groups work towards a common cause have been a unique achievement.
Role of Indian Army in United Nations Peace Keeping
The Indian Army"s participation in United Nations Peace Keeping commenced in 1950 in Korea endured hardships in far-off lands of the world, to bring peace, hope and cheer to the victims of violence. Hence, in a span of more than 50 years, 43 missions have been covered in which over 90,000 Indian soldiers have served. Indian troops have also taken part in some of the most difficult operations and have suffered many casualties in the service of the United Nations. One of its most significant contributions has been to restore peace and stability in Africa and Asia. As of March 2006, India is ranked as the 3rd largest troop contributor to the United Nations. As of August 2006, India has participated in 43 out of 60 United Nations missions and has given 12 Force Commanders, 4 Deputy Force Commanders, 2 military advisors and 117 persons have made supreme sacrifice while serving under the United Nations.
