Ignace Tirkey is a member of the Indian Men`s Hockey Team, and has captained it on occasion. He is also a member of the armed forces, as a junior commissioned officer at the Engineer Corps.
Ignacious ("Ignace") Tirkey was born on 10th May in the year 1981 in Lulkidihi, Navapara in the Sundargarh District, Orissa. He is married to Masira Surin, a member of the Indian women`s national team and speaks Oraon, Oriya language, Hindi language and English.
Career of Ignace Tirkey
In the year 2001, Tirkey made his debut for the national side at the Akbar el Yom Tournament in Cairo against Belgium. As the team member of the Indian national hockey team he competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics that was held in Athens. At the tournament India has finished at the seventh position. This eminent player of midfield originally belongs to the Oraon tribe of Chota Nagpur region. Ignace Tirkey was the hero of the Asia Cup final that was played against Pakistan, where his goal between Sohail Abbas` legs enabled India to take the winning lead while scores were tied at 2-2. It was the first ever goal by Tirkey against Pakistan. Indian TV channels interrupted their regular programmes when India won the final to announce the victory.
Awards and Honours
Tirkey is a recipient of the Arjuna Award, which he received in 2009, and the Padma Shri Awards, India`s fourth highest civilian honour. He was also the recipient of Ekalavya Puraskar.
