Harsud

In the vast country of India, it is quite expected that numerous cities and towns have grown in large numbers. In the state of Madhya Pradesh also, one can find the existence of various places and towns. Amongst them , Harsud is significant . Harsud is a town that lies under the jurisdiction of a `nagar pahchayat` .It is located in the Khandwa district , and is also called East Nimar District of the state. The reliable source also states that Harsud is a seven hundred year old town in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The Census report of India that had been brought out in the year 2001 throws some light on several features of Harsud viz. population, literacy rate etc. As per the report of Harsud, the total population has been enumerated to be 15,869. Also the population status of males , females as well as children too can be inferred from the report. Out of the total population , the males comprise of 52 percent , while the females constitute of 48 percent. The children below six years of age comprises of 14 percent.

The literacy rate of Harsud too can be deciphered from it. It is interesting to note that the average literacy rate of Harsud is 69 percent which is higher than 59.5 percent , the average literacy rate of the entire nation. To be specific, the male literacy rate has been enumerated to be 77 percent and also that of female is 61 percent.

Due to its integration with the Khandwa District, it is natural that the Harsud town too is going to follow the same tradition and lifestyle of the district as a whole. Thus majority of the people of Harsud sustain their livelihood by practicing agricultural activities. Important that are produced in the region include cotton, soyabean, jowar, ground nut, banana, wheat, chilly, sugarcane, etc.

Also in order to communicate, several people who are residing in Harsud, mostly speak languages like Hindi . Also as per linguists , Gujarati, Rajasthani ,Korku, Bhili, Nimari are also spoken in some parts of the region.

Experts too have emphasized on the mode of the religion that has been followed here. According to them , in the whole of the district , people follow the Hindu religion . However, the practice of Jainism , Sikhism etc too are prevalent here.

Throughout the year, a multitude of pilgrims from various parts of India throng the place. Especially during the Kartika month, a famous fair is held at this place, where myriads of devotees take part. Apart from that, various other festivals and fairs too add a lot of vigor and excitement in the lives of the people of Harsud. According to the sources, there are near about forty fairs that are organized in the whole of the district. Thus it is obvious that people of Harsud too participate in the fairs wholeheartedly. Dance and music too become part and parcel of every place of the Khandwa district. Dramas, `Ramleela`, `Garba` increase the mood of jubilance and festivity.
