Gitchandra Singh Tongbram

Gitchandra Singh Tongbram was born on 2nd June 1913, at Imphal. He was influenced by his father Panditraj Atombapu Sharma. In modern Manipur theatre and drama he was a force to be reckoned with. He graduated from Guwahati University. He worked as a clerk in Revenue Department. He became a teacher at churachand high School. Thereafter he headed the Department of Manipur language and literature of Imphal College. He retired as it`s vice principal in 1974. He has also served as a president of Manipur sahitya parisad and cultural forum. He was member of general Council of Sahitya Akademi of Manipur.

He started writing plays based on social problem post World War II. He presented humorously and sarcastically the social problems. He has adapted and translated several plays of Shakespeare, G.B Shaw and Ibsen. His plays have witty dialogue, powerful arguments, less of action and a social outlook atmosphere. He is the founder of the Society Theatre in Manipur.

His works are Mani Mamou, Lamja Parasuram (Feature Film), Keku Lotpi Kaofaabi, Tapta, Nabongkhao and Anouba Leela Macha Manga.
