General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh

He was the former army chief of India, was born in 1903 and served 35 years to the nation.

General Satyawant Mallannah ShrinageshGeneral Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh was in 1903 at Kolhapur. His father Dr Shrinagesh Mallannah, was a doctor and a personal physician to the Nizam of Hyderabad. In his childhood he was sent to England. General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh educated in a public school of England. Later he received education from Cambridge University .He was also the student of Sandhurst Military Academy in the U.K. He was commissioned into the British Indian Army at the age of 20.He was appointed at the North Stafford shire Regiment but soon he was sent to Burma and was posted the 2/1 Madras Pioneers. His next appointment was in the 4/19th Hyderabad Regiment. (Now Kumaon Regiment.) Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh served as an Adjutant in Singapore. In 1939 General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh was given the charge of instructor of the India Military Academy, Deradhun. In the battle in Assam and Burma in 1939 he commanded the 6/19th Hyderabad Regiment.

General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh also commanded the 64th Indian Infantry Brigade of the 19th Indian Division in Burma. In 1945 he was appointed as the Deputy Chief of the Indian Military Mission to Germany. After returning from Germany General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh commanded 268th Indian Infantry Brigade in Japan. On promotion to the Major General he took over the charge of GOC of the Madras area. In 1948 he was posted as the Adjutant General at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi. In 1947 during the war against Pakistan he held the post of overall commander of all troops in Jammu & Kashmir. General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh was posted as the GOC-in-C Western Command in 1949.He rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in 1950 and subsequently was appointed as the GOC-in-C Southern Command. General Satyawant Mallannah Shrinagesh was promoted to the rank of Army Chief of India on 14 May 1955.In 1957 he retired after completing 34 years of dedicated service to the nation.
