General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was born in Calcutta.He received his early education from St. Xavier`s College in Calcutta. Then he moved to London and got admitted to Highgate School.After that he did course at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst in 1926.In 1928 General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was commissioned in the Indian Army.Then General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri joined to the 7th Light Cavalry. In 1940 he was posted to the 5th Indian Division and served in Sudan, Eritrea, Abyssinia (present-day Ethiopia) and the western deserts of Africa. Within two years General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri got the promotion and appointed as Lieutenant Colonel.
At the time of the surrender of the Italian Forces in The East Africa General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was also present there. For his outstanding performances he was conferred with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) .The British Government also mentioned his name thrice in their dispatches. In 1941 he was given the post of the instructor of the British Staff College in Quetta, Pakistan in undivided India. He was the chief of the Indian Armoured Corps on a trek of 3,000 miles, which was to the battle in Burma and subsequently this troop won the fighting in Rangoon. After that he rose to the rank of Brigadier and posted to Malaya (now a days it is a part Malaysia). In1946 General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was appointed the leader of the Indian Victory Contingent to London. In London he pursued a course at the Imperial Defence College. In 1947 he came back to India and subsequently selected for the post of the Director of Military Operations & Intelligence. He led the famous Operation Polo in 1948.
General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was the Governor of Hyderabad in 1948.During this time he established Osmania University in Hyderabad where he was the Dean. Later he held different military posts. He was the leader of the Indian Military Delegation to China and first colonel of the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers. In 1962 General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was appointed, as the Chief of Army Staff of Indian Army. General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was very interested in the Western Music.When he was the Chief of Army Staff he set up Delhi Symphony Society.
After serving 38 years in the Indian Army General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri took retired on 07 June 1966 from the military service. In 1966 he was nominated as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada.Apart from his military service General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri wrote books based on his vast experiences. He also worked as Military Correspondent and literature reviewer for the leading newspapers.
For his outstanding performances General Joyanto Nath Chaudhuri was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan award by the Indian Government.
