General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor

General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was the 9th Chief of Army Staff of India.

General Gopal Gurunath BewoorGeneral Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was born on the 11th August of the year 1917.At the age of 20 he joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun in July 1937. General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was given the Gold Medal and the coveted Sword of Honour for best all-round cadet in the Indian Military Academy. General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was associated with the Green Howards and subsequently appointed to the Baluch Regiment. During World War II he was posted in Burma and fought against the Japenese. After that he joined Staff College, Quetta in 1945 and was appointed as the Under-Secretary (Military) of the Viceroy`s Executive Council in 1946.During the partition, General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was Secretary of the Army Partition Committee, which was responsible for the allocation of weapons, equipment and regiments between India and Pakistan. In December 1947 General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and posted to the Dogra Regiment because the Baluch regiment went to Pakistan during allotment.

General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor took the charge as a director of the NCC (National Cadet Corps) in April 1948.He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier from colonel in 1952.He was appointed as the Director, Personnel Services at Army HQ in 1953. After that he held the post of Major General in 1959 and served as the Chief of Staff HQ of an Army Command. In 1961 General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was given the charge of GOC of a Division. He served as the Director of Military Training at Army HQ in 1963. General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in 1964 and appointed as the GOC of a corps. In 1967 he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of Army Staff. He assumed the charge of 9th Chief of Army Staff, on 15 January 1973.Before his retirement on 31 May 1975 he served more than two years as Chief of Army Staff of India. From February 1976 to March 1978 General Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was the Indian Ambassador to Denmark. He also served as the Honorary Colonel of the Dogra Regiment till 11th August 1979.
