Gaibi Nath Dasgupta was born in the year 1936. He was a lighting designer in Bengali theatre and played a crucial role in popularizing Bengali plays. He was born in the village of Madhutaty, in Purulia District of West Bengal. Dasgupta was trained as an electrical engineer. He started his theatre career at the National School of Drama where he was a faculty member from 1959 to 1986. There Gaibi Nath Dasgupta taught stage lighting to every batch. He designed lights for many productions, at the School and elsewhere, and planned the lighting schemes of new auditoria like Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal.

He also lectured at Indian universities and abroad, and wrote Guide to Stage Lighting in 1986. This is a definitive book on the subject in India as well. This personality died in 2001
