Folk Dances of Chandel District are the several indigenous dance forms and styles which showcase the culture of the region. Chandel District is one of the nine districts of Manipur state of India. It came into existence in the year 1974 and formerly it was known as Tengnoupal District. The civilization of this district walked the road of culture defining the dances and the folk ways.
Several communities inhabit the area and the ethnic tribes hypnotize the beholders with their exotic dance canvas. Prominent tribes in the district are Anal Tribe, Lamkang Tribe, Kuki Tribe, Moyon Tribe, Monsang Tribe, Chothe Tribe, Thadou Tribe, Paite Tribe, Maring Tribe and Zou Tribe etc. There are also other communities like Meiteis and Muslims (Meitei Pangal) in small numbers as compared to the tribes.
Each of the tribal groups has their own distinct culture and tradition in their dance, music, dress, customary practices and pastimes. The folk dances of the ethnic tribes captivate the beholders with their exotic costumes and simple but graceful rhythm. Paite Dance, Thadou Kuki Dance, Tarao War Dance are some of the famous folk dance forms of Chandel District. Paite dance is of various Kinds like Dak Lam, Jangta Lam, Phit Lam, Ton Lam, and Silam Lam. Most of these folk dances are related to everyday life and culture of the people. These are orally passed through generations.
